Proofreading

Proofreading is the final editing process for a manuscript or writing piece. Let's make sure your writing is healthy and polished before you publish!

Before this stage, the manuscript has usually gone through a thorough editing process. The proofreader is the sharp eyed final review.  They look closely for errors in spelling, punctuation, spacing, page numbers, etc.

In an age of auto correct why would you need a Proofreader? Have you every noticed how word processing programs cannot identify an incorrect word if it is spelled correctly, e.g.. “in” was typed instead of “an.” Often they miss vital shifts in tense. And they never offer fact checking or formatting help.

Hiring an actual proofreader gives you the assurance that your writing is in good hands.

Basic Proofreading

Perfecting your writing without changing its content or meaning

Clear and enticing communication is an invaluable part of achieving your goals.

Proofreading, the process of eliminating grammatical errors and punctuation, improves your reputation and guarantees readers will pay attention to your message.

Our proofreading services will repair:

  • Incorrect grammar, spelling, and punctuation

  • Inconsistencies in spelling & style

  • Incorrect words & misused homonyms

  • Inconsistencies in capitalization

  • Confusing or awkward page & word breaks

  • Incorrect captioning on any illustrations

  • Word choice and suggest improvements

  • Issues of clarity in the text

  • Inconsistencies in tone Discrepancies between tone and document type

Your Writing Doctor will deliver valuable comments and helpful feedback on your writing style and apply advice from your chosen style guide if available.

Fact Checking

Catching informational inconsistencies

If you have a lot of niche information in your book or writing, you might consider fact-checking services. Your Writing Doctor will comb through your work;

  • Checking all the factual references carefully via external sources

  • Alerting you right away to inconsistencies

  • Suggesting alternative content

A fact checking is vital to non-fiction work and can be beneficial to historical fiction or complex world building.

Indexing

List of references in your book & the pages on which one can find them

Indexing is an important part of proofreading for textbooks and dense nonfiction. Fiction writers will find the service helpful if their manuscript includes an index of characters or similar information, such as science fiction or fantasy writing.

You may create the index yourself and have Your Writing Doctor double-check it. However, if your manuscript is truly extensive Your Writing Doctor can help through the entire process to create a comprehensive list of the noteworthy references in your work and collaborate with you to come up with an index of the appropriate length and style.

Formatting

Refine all the elements of your book’s formatting

The final and detailed conclusion to proofreading is formatting. It includes correcting;

  • Inconsistencies in layout & typography

  • Inconsistencies in page numbers, chapter headings, and captioning

  • Aesthetic errors

While any simple writing pieces will not require it, formatting is an asset for anyone whose writing or project is design-heavy or extremely dependent on layout to convey the story.

Your Writing Doctor's Process

To get started please email your document to Your Writing Doctor, include your editing requirements & your choice of official referencing style if you have one.

Your Writing Doctor will send you a quote. The quote will include which services will benefit your writing the most.

Your Writing Doctor will not accept a project if I feel we do not have expertise in the area (e.g., all writing projects, and the editing of Masters Theses or Doctoral Dissertations, will be considered on a case by case basis).

All work will be handled confidentially and in a timely manner; and I will be accessible via e-mail throughout the process. I realize how important deadlines are and will make sure you meet them.

It is preferred that all submissions, other than galley proofs, be originally submitted double-spaced in 12 point font Times New Roman with one inch margins on white 81/2 x 11 inch paper. Keep formatting to a minimum at the beginning of the process.

When the proofreading is complete I will send you two copies of your work: a “clean” copy that is ready for use and a  copy with all the edits tracked and saved. You’ll then be able to check and approve every change, so you’re always in control of the final draft.

Your Writing Doctor is able to work with Microsoft Word Documents, PowerPoint Presentations, Mac Pages Files, flash drives & hard copies. Please inquire with other document types.
